6 Places to Visit During Your Trip to New Orleans

I finally got to spend a weekend in New Orleans with my besties, booze and Beyoncé. Days before I left for the Big Easy, it didn’t even seem like a possible trip. My finances or Hurricane Flo were not working in my favor. With the help of good friends and a few tears (not kidding), I made it!

Café du Monde

If you’re unaware of my love for Princess and the Frog, this is me letting you know. My love for that movie and Princess Tiana made it neccessary for me to have a beignet, for the first time ever. The funnel cake like treat paired perfectly with my café au lait at Café du Monde.

Harrah’s Casino

I basically went to Harrah’s for tequila. Straight up tequila. Das it. I quickly learned in Vegas that I should stay away from casinos, yet we took full advantage of the drinks being free when playing the penny slots. The most I won was $2.95, but the dance-off we had before leaving is priceless.

Gallier’s Restaurant & Oyster Bar

At Gallier’s, I ate a gigantic shrimp rémoulade sandwich, that I was too hungry to take a picture of. The restaurant was walking distance from our hotel, so in my mind, a nap was in the near future. I was wrong.

The Absinthe House

When we arrived to Absinthe House, the sun was super aggressive. The wrong cocktail choice could’ve turned this trip into a disaster, but my roomie picked a Planter’s Punch for me. I also enjoyed a few sips of his absinthe + sugar + fire combo. After watching Girls’ Trip and sharing personal absinthe stories — we were both excited and nervous to stop here.

Laffite’s Blacksmith Shop Bar

I sampled the Voodoo daiquiri, aka purple drank, but my friend got a round Heroes. To my understanding, it was a basically a margarita with red bull. Whatever was inside it was delicious. We made friends while dancing to jukebox jams, and then joined a Second Line.

Willa Jean

After 4 hours of patiently waiting on my bus to arrive, we decided to have brunch at Willa Jean. I had no idea what the food would be like, but it was walking distance from the station. I had the hangover bowl featuring braised short rib, grits, caramelized onions, garlic and a poached egg. My drink of choice was the Sasha Fierce, made with rosé and honey vodka. It was created specifically for Beyoncé weekend. Note: I was at the station for 2 more hours after returning from Willa Jean.

Other places we ate, drink and/or danced:

Felipe’s

The Alibi

Lost Love Lounge

Tropical Isle

Mango-Mango Daiquiri

Brothers

…many more places we ran into for the music, without knowing the name.

It was hard to come back to Austin. Not only because I was going to miss New Orleans, but because my bus home literally never showed up. Sneaking into a rooftop pool, a 24-hour fried chicken spot and Bourbon Street dance battles made my 8-hour bus delay worth the wait.
