What Happened to… 2001?

Most of us remember 2001 because of the tragic attacks that occurred on September 11th. While this devastating event still affects us, The Palmetto Peaches are taking a walk down memory lane by remembering 2001’s fashion, music and more.

What Happened to 2001 - The Palmetto Peaches

Here are a few things that happened in 2001:

  • Apple announced iTunes and the iPod
  • Legally Blonde, Donni Darko,  The Princess Diaries, Shrek and Save The Last Dance debuted in theaters. Also the first installments in the Harry Potter and Fast & Furious series were released.
  • The  Netherlands becomes the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage
  • Venus Williams was the “better” Williams sister and on top of the tennis world

Now that  you’re in 2001 mode, here’s what The Palmetto Peaches were up to:

What Happened to 2001 – WHAT WE WERE DOINGWhat Happened To 2001 - The Palmetto Peaches

Ace: This is the year I turned 13. Not only was I fighting horrible acne, bad skin, AND getting 8 wisdom teeth removed–I was battling a beautiful obsession with Mariah Carey. For my 13th birthday, I had a Mariah Carey birthday cake. (If you’re a friend or family member and have a picture of it, please send it to me.) The pictures I used were from the Rainbow CD and the Heartbreaker single. Remember when I thought Mariah was singing my name in Heartbreaker? Click here to refresh your memory.

Why was this ever ok?!? ???

2001 was also the year my 7th grade class took an overnight trip to Barrier Island. That’s probably when the hippie in me was born. We had these cute Kumbaya moments, which was a big deal because 7th grade was “rough” for a lot of us. How could you not be happy after a trust fall, glow in the dark Lifesavers and dancing in mud?

Donni: Hmm, in 2001 I was 12 – burning mix CDs from songs I downloaded on Napster, Limewire and Audiogalaxy; taking more dance classes and counting down the days until I became a real teenager. I also started writing fan fiction that year, but more on that when we talk about 2002. 2001 saw my last years in my private Christian school. I’d been in class with the same kids since first grade — some I’d known since in preschool. My school was small and we were a family. I don’t remember how many girls were in my sixth grade class, but in 7th grade, I was the only girl. I remember sitting in my pre-Algebra (I was taking math with the 8th graders) class one day, when my PE and Bible teacher interrupted class and walked quickly to the back of the room to whisper into Mr. Ard’s ear. It was September 11 – a day we’ll never forget. They took us to the chapel – where we prayed and cried and tried to understand what had just happened.

What Happened to 2001 – What We Wore

Ace: Yo. I got this airbrushed Phat Farm denim suit for the Christmas of 2000, and thought I was so cool. Guess who was airbrushed on the back? Tigger. ? Yes, the only tiger I truly loved. Don’t let me forget my gold name necklace and army fatigue Saucony’s. Other than ugly clothes, I also wore a bald head. My mama convinced me to cut my hair, because it was damaged. Although it was for the best, I really did look like a little man. Ya girl was #TeamNatural.

What Happened to 2001 - The Palmetto Peaches

Donni: When I wasn’t in my uniform (plaid skirts, navy blue or khaki jumpers and skirts) I was wishing I could be and dress like Kelly Rowland from Destiny’s Child. Now 2001 was the year of “Independent Women Part I”, “Survivor” and “Bootylicious” Destiny’s Child. I wanted to dye my hair just like Kelly. She was my Beyoncé – well before Beyoncé was Queen B. My momma wasn’t having it. I dressed more like Mandy Moore – safe and wholesome.

What Happened to 2001 – WHAT WE LISTENED TO

Donni: I had split personalities when it came to music back in 2001. Either super tweeny pop or R&B was pumping through my portable CD player. Obviously, BSB was still high on my list with jams like “The Call” and “Drowning“, but AJ went to rehab that summer. I will also admit NSYNC had some strong contenders back in ’01. Who remembers “Gone“?  I also distinctly remember trying to learn all the choreography from Britney Spears “I’m a Slave 4 U“. Then O-Town dropped this classic:

Outside of tween pop: Jagged Edge – Where the Party At;  OutKast – Ms. Jackson; Sunshine Anderson – Heard It All Before; Eve and Gwen Stefani – Let Me Blow Ya Mind and J-Lo and Ja Rule – I’m Real. But my favorite was probably this fantastically dramatic singalong:

Ace: Obviously, Mariah Carey. The Glitter movie and soundtrack released in the fall of 2001, and I faithfully supported both. At the time, I had every album. MC turned me into a hopeless romantic. The way I sang “Vision of Love”, you would’ve thought I was going through an ugly divorce. However, I was slowly recovering from having my heart broken by the Spice Girls. But I wasn’t too hurt to learn the dance moves to Bootylicious, or choreograph my own moves to Lady Marmalade.

The Award Goes To… (Friday Faves)

Friday Faves - The Award Goes To Edition - The Palmetto Peaches

For this edition of Friday Favorites we’re announcing our winners for some of the things that have caught our eye/kept us entertained at the beginning of this new year.

Fave Golden Globe Winner: The Award Goes to…

Ace: Although Taraji P. Henson’s #YouGonWait line stole my heart, I was so happy to see Gael García Bernal (Mozart in the Jungle) win Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series- Musical or Comedy. His character makes me laugh out loud EVERY episode. Mozart in the Jungle is one of my new favs, because I get to dabble in the arts, and be a little dysfunctional at the same time.
Friday Faves: The Award Goes To... - Mozart in the Jungle - The Palmetto Peaches

Donni: Well he didn’t win and this really has nothing to do with the movie Concussion, but Will and Jada’s PDA on the red carpet was everything to me. Real definition of #relationshipgoals.

Fave Oscar Nominee: The Award Goes to…

Donni: I’ll get to my favorite Oscar nominee in just a moment, but first I wanted to mention the minority-free Oscar nominee list. Last year the hashtag  #OscarsSoWhite was used to protest the lack of diversity of the nominees. And for the second year in a row, Oscar voters put forth an all-white field of acting nominees.  Here are some of the snubs, many who were nominated for Golden Globes, BAFTA or Spirit Awards: Will Smith in Concussion, Michael B. Jordan in Creed, Idris Elba in Beasts of No Nation and Samuel L. Jackson (whom I can’t stand) in The Hateful Eight, Benicio Del Toro in Sicario, and Kitana Kiki Rodriguez and Mya Taylor, the transgender actresses for Tangerine. I took a peek at the comments section of a few articles that covered this yesterday — big mistake!!! I kept reading that there are BET Awards so everyone should stop complaining (uh no, not the point).  Or that there shouldn’t be token black or Latino actors nominated just to make everyone happy. The point is regardless of color these actors had Oscar-worthy performances.  Now on to who I’m really excited for: LEOOOOO!!

Leonardo DiCaprio has earned his fifth Academy Award nomination for his performance in The Revenant. Break out your lucky shot glass, socks and underwear because I’m really hoping 5th time is the charm for Leo. As much as I love the memes that are created when he loses, I really do think he deserves to win. He has to take down Bryan Cranston, Matt Damon, Michael Fassbender and Eddie Redmayne to grab that award, but damnit I’m rooting for him.

Ace: I hope Leo finally gets an Oscar this year. That is all.

Fave Goal Achieving tool – The award goes to…

Ace: So far, my favorite goal achieving tool is my new Daily Bloom planner! I’m taking baby steps with getting back into a routine (one of my 2016 goals). So before investing in a more advanced planner, I chose this one. I love it so far, because it reminds me of the agendas I used in high school. (Except I didn’t use fingernail polish to remove the screen off to be able to add pictures of my friends.)

Donni: Like a true planner girl, I was going to say my Erin Condren Life Planner, but The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing has really helped me declutter my life. I’m not finished going through all of my stuff, but I’ve already cleared out 2 dresser drawers full of clothing and made my closet actually look like a closet and not a storage space on Storage Wars.

Favorite 2016 Inspiration: The Award goes to…

Donni:I’m taking a page out of Kid President‘s book and am making 2016 my year of awesome. In the words of Kid President, I’m going to be like cheese (or bacon) and make everything I touch better.

The Award Goes to.. Friday Faves - Inspiration - The Palmetto Peaches

Ace:  Solange Knowles and Amandla Stenberg sprinkling #BlackGirlMagic like confetti in Teen Vogue.

“There’s a secret language shared among black girls who are destined to climb mountains and cross rivers in a world that tells us to belong to the valleys that surround us. You learn it very young, and although it has no words, you hear it clearly. You sense it when you walk into rooms with your hair in full bloom, each coil glorious, your sway swift and your stance proud. You feel it like a rhythm you can’t shake if you even dared to quiet the sounds around you.” –Solange Knowles

2016 Goals

New year, new me…right? Well we’re not going to go that far, but we wanted to start the new year off by sharing some of our 2016 goals – personal and blogging.

2016 Goals - The Palmetto Peaches

2016 Goals – Ace

  • Write a book: Although I’ve been working with my cousin to write her memoir, I want to create my own project. A few weeks ago, I created a timeline to start implementing the end of January. There are a few ideas floating around in my head, but I haven’t narrowed it down yet to what my book will actually be about.
  • Social media cleanse: I already took a baby step with Facebook by deleting the app from phone. My social networks are way overdue for an unfriend and unfollow spree.
  • Learn about chakras: Another part of my social media cleanse is following people who actually interest me. The common theme in the latest accounts I follow is they tweet a lot about chakras and balance. Lately I’ve been taking shots of Apple Cider Vinegar to wake-up my third eye chakra (Ajna). So it’ll be pretty cool to learn about how to balance and align the rest of my chakras.
  • Start using a planner: I think I was so good at “schooling” because I always wrote things down. Whether it was notes on a chapter, adding my work schedule to my calendar or just doodling. So the goal is to start using a physical calendar instead of a digital one (also known as my iPhone). My life was just a tad more stable when I had some sort of routine, and a planner will help me get back on track.
  • Design a journal: Even if it’s just for myself to use, I want to design a space for me to write my daily thoughts.
Blogging Goals
  • Learn to code: I used to be really into this stuff when I was a kid, so it’s time to bring it back. I signed up for a few free, online coding courses. Hopefully, I’ll put them to use in 2016!
  • Connect with The Palmetto Peaches’ target audience/readers: I’d like to bring in more authentic readers who actually want to read what I’m saying–instead of folks just trying to get a follow back.
  • Rebrand my personal blog: The Palmetto Peaches blog isn’t the place for me to remove my filter, or speak on every issue that bothers me. Soooo, I need to rebrand myself, and connect with my future tribe in 2016.

2016 Goals – Donni

I’ve moved into my new 2016 planner and one thing that I’m implementing is a monthly mission board that houses goals by the following categories: financial, health, home, personal, social and work.  I’m not going to share all of my goals, but below you can get an idea of what I’m working toward this year.

Financial

  • One year saving challenge – I’m sure some of you have heard of this idea. Every week you put a set amount away in savings and the amount increases or decreases in set increments. With my saving challenge, my goal is to is have $1378 saved. I’ve created a printable for anyone who wants to join me on this challenge. I’ve also created a blank version so you could set your own amounts based on your financial goals.

2016 Goals - Saving Challenge - The Palmetto Peaches

Health

  • I want to get back on track with committing to a fitness routine. By the end of the year, I would like to have a routine figured out that I’m consistently working out 3 times a week.
  • Drink 96 ounces of water per day.

Personal

  • Working on my personal relationship with God. With any relationship, there are ups and downs and I’m at the point where I would like strengthen my faith. No matter what or who you believe in, hopefully you can understand my need to embark on a spiritual journey of sorts.
  • Read 24 books. To be honest my original goal was 52 books. I love to read, but I’m not sure this was realistic with some of the other goals I have.  I’ve joined the Paper and Glam book club and am excited to join these ladies reading a new book each month. I’ve also chosen a second selection for each month. You see my full 2016 reading list here.
Blogging Goals
  • Write about things that scare me. While I like making you guys chuckle about why Fifty Shades of Grey is the worst book ever written, I want to write deeper posts. So more personal topics coming this year!
  • Take more blogging e-courses. I’ve participated in a few e-courses last year, but a few turned into let me tell you why my blog is awesome presentations – which obviously wasn’t very helpful. If anyone has any suggestions for some good e-courses,please leave them in the comments below.

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas, peeps!!

We hope you all have been enjoying time with your family and friends. We have. So much that this post was supposed was scheduled to go live at 11 am — it’s 11 pm  (whoops) and we just realized it was never posted. Too much rum cake and sugar cookies and jamming to holiday tunes.

We’ll be taking a few days off from posting  — call it a holiday hangover if you will. We’ll be back in 2016 with new content,  giveaways, and more printables. What’s more exciting is that February will mark our one year blogiversary!!

Friday Faves: Holiday Edition

The holidays are quickly approaching so grab your holiday gift list, crank up the Christmas jams, turn on a classic or cheesy holiday movie and soak in the holiday spirit. We’re sharing some of our holiday faves with you and hope you find something you may want to try.

Friday Favorites - Holiday Edition - The Palmetto Peaches

Friday Faves: Holiday Edition

Fave Movie

Ace:The Polar Express has been a tradition in my life since I was 11 years old! My super sweet creative writing teacher read it to us every year before we left for winter break. It never failed for her to cry at the end. She even gave us a bell with a little note that said, “I believe in you.” (Are you crying yet? Because I am.)

I started my own tradition with my nephews a few years ago, where we read the book together on Christmas Eve. So it’s no surprise that I’ve watched The Polar Express three times this week, and probably will one more time this weekend.

Donni: I don’t think I have one favorite holiday movie, but every year I must watch Home Alone, all of the fantastic claymation classics, and The Nightmare Before Christmas. If you read my holiday movies list, you know I’ve just discovered Love Actually. This movie is definitely going on my annual to-watch list.

Fave Flavor

Ace: This week is all about the peppermint mocha and vanilla caramel creamers my big sister got for me. I used a caramel apple biscotti to stir my coffee (made using the vanilla caramel creamer) and it was ah-may-zing!

Donni: I’m in the process of slowly transitioning from my fall flavors and scents over to my winter choices. This weekend I’m on the hunt for some of these fantastic Paramount Coffee flavors. How cute is this packaging? I think it would make a great addition to holiday gift baskets.

Friday Faves: Holiday Edition - The Palmetto Peaches

I’m also huge on red velvet during the holidays. So if anyone has any cool recipes, please feel free to send them my way.

FAVE Beverage

Ace: Although I haven’t tried it yet, I’m drooling over Alanna & Company’s Spiked Cider, and hoping to make it on Christmas Day. Call me simple, but Bourbon and Fireball are an easy way to my heart. Here’s the link to the recipe: http://www.alannaandcompany.com/2015/12/festive-drinks-for-holidays.html?m=1

Friday Faves: Holiday Edition - The Palmetto Peaches

Donni: My mouth is watering over Ace’s choice. You can’t go wrong with cider. However, this time of year I’m hot chocolate everything! Spiked or non-alcoholic, I don’t care. The cocoa goodness makes me happy. If you’re looking for some more holiday beverage ideas check out here and here.

Fave Accessory

Ace: To be honest, I haven’t bought any super cute fall or winter clothes/accessories yet. I’m still rocking my University of South Carolina sweatshirts. I’m in Charleston right now where it’s 40 degrees when you wake up, and 75 at lunch. I’d love to get my hands on a new beanie and/or this bear sleeping bag.

Friday Faves - Holiday Edition - The Palmetto Peaches

Donni: Can sparkle be an accessory? The answer is yes. For the holidays, I love sequined anything. Check out this Pinterest board with sparkly holiday outfit inspiration.
