Friday Faves: Fall is Here

We’re starting to officially make the transition from summer to fall. So we’ve gathered up some of things (and people) we’re adding to our faves list as with the season change.

Friday Faves: Fall is Here

Faves Sweet Treat

Ace: Apple Pie Vodka from Voodoo Tiki Bar (aka my job). All you need is ice cubes and a little whipped cream–your taste buds will thank me later. I can’t wait until the weather gets a few degrees colder, so I can add a little heat to that vodka, and sip on it.

Donni: Well now I want that apple pie vodka Ace is talking about. I’m going basic:  Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes.

Fave Vlogger/Blogger

Ace: I haven’t discovered any new faves just yet, but I’m still riding with Sheriden Chanel and Kiah McBride from xoNecole.com. Donni and I met them at Melanin and Mimosas a few years ago, and now they’re doing big things with another one of my favorites: Necole Kane.

Donni:  I recently stumbled on DaNi B. Jade’s YouTube channel and love her DIY tutorials. Also, I’m loving Chelsea Williams, from That’s Chelsea. She’s a 4c naturalista (like me) that blogs about all things health and wellness including green beauty and her plant-based lifestyle.

Favorite TV Moment

Donni: Blackish isn’t just a TV show. It’s a socially conscious experience. I love how the show tackles “uncomfortable” topics that people would prefer not to talk about. It’s not that they tackle it, but they still get you to laugh while doing so. Wednesday’s premiere episode: Juneteenth –  celebrated on June 19, which marks the day in 1865 that the last slaves were freed in the United States – provided a powerful history lesson on an overlooked holiday.

Ace: I know there’s a lot new fall TV shows out, but I just finished Freeform’s The Bold Type and it stole my heart. The show follows 3 best friends, in NYC, working for a women-based magazine. I like to think that Kat (a fierce social media director with slight emotional issues) is what I would’ve been like if I took on a big city after college. I was slightly embarrassed while crying at the end of the first episode. The magazine’s HBIC gave a speech about feminism, sisterhood and taking chances–and it hit me straight in the feels.

Friday Faves: Melanated Edition

Friday Faves: Melanated Edition - The Palmetto Peaches - palmsinatl.comFebruary is Black History Month. Beyoncé kicked off the month with her pregnancy announcement and dropping a pregnancy photo album. Hey twins!! (If anyone wants to start some sort of pool for baby names- I’m in!). I really do encourage you to use this month to learn about and celebrate all of the contributions black Americans have made to this country. Black history is American history. However, I’m not going to walk you though highlights of black history. Although, I’d love it if you shared your favorites with me in the comments below.

I thought I would have a little fun with our Friday Faves with a Melanated Edition featuring some amazing black-owned businesses.

Friday Faves: Melanated Edition

Fave Natural Beauty Product – Olive + Aloe

Friday Faves: Melanated Edition - The Palmetto Peaches - palmsinatl.comA friend had some of this moisturizer on her dresser and I used it in instantly became obsessed. I actually tried to take the little two ounce bottle home. Olive + Aloe is a head-to-toe, all natural handcrafted moisturizer. Go get you some!!

Friday Faves: Melanated Edition - The Palmetto Peaches - palmsinatl.comFave Beauty Subscription Box –  We Are Onyx

I love a good subscription box. I was gifted a Birchbox subscription and while I liked most of the products there were always a few that I couldn’t use because it was not meant for women of color. So I ended up giving a lot of items away (You’re welcome, Kim!). We Are Onyx features products curated for black women. So if you’re thinking of gifting a beauty subscription box to a melanated friend consider this company.

Fave Game Night Must Have – Cards For All People

Cards For All People makes fun, nostalgia-filled card games that test knowledge of cultural milestones and moments. Our games aim to bring people of all types together through laughter and friendly debate.  So think a cultural Cards Against Humanity. Their line-up includes Black Card Revoked (with multiple expansion packs), Nerd Card Revoked, Gay Card Revoked, Girls Night Out, and Asian Card Revoked (shipping this spring).

Fave Natural Products and Accessories – Toni Daley

Toni Daley is one of my all time faves! I watch her vlogs on YouTube and she is serious manespiration.  Toni Daley has a collection of awesome earrings, hair wraps, and out of control natural wigs (for you ladies looking for protective styles). I’m rocking on of my many pairs of Toni Daley earrings in the picture below.

Until next time dolls and gents!

Fave POTUS/FLOTUS Moment

Ace: There were plenty of emotional moments during President Obama’s farewell speech, but when he gave a shoutout to his bae, “Michelle LaVaughn Robinson”, I lost it. Not to knock any of his achievements, but to see them in love, while leading our country, and looking sharp while doing so, are #RealLifeGoals. I’m so grateful that I spent the last 8 years with such an amazing President and First Lady. P.S. You can grab my shirt here.

Donni: Hmm, Can I pick one for each year President Obama was in office? Please note: I cried some real tears making that sentence past tense.  Actually, I don’t think I’m ready to let them go as the first family so here’s a placeholder:Friday Favorites: New Year, New Faves - The Palmetto Peaches - palmsinatl.com

Fave Mantra/inspiration

Donni:  This year I began writing daily affirmations in my journal and while I’m only 20 days in I already feel like I’m in a more positive space.

#Affirmations – Day 1 of 365.

Ace:

“The magic begins in you. Feel your own energy, and realize that similar energy exists within the earth, stones, plants, water, wind, fire, colors and animals.” – S. Cunningham

This quote came with the crystals and sage wands I ordered from The Hoodwitch. The raw rose quartz is for self-love, and the chunky pyrite is for focus and confidence. I can use a little more of all 3 in 2017.

Fave 2017 Release

Ace: Moonlight (Rereleased after the Golden Globes) Moonlight blessed my soul with the best of both worlds: the hood and the arts.

Donni: I’m going to have to go with Ed Sheeran’s new music: Shape of You and Castle on the Hill. Let me set the stage: December 2015, Ed decides he’s going to take a break from music so he could do an Eat Pray Love or “travel the world and see everything [he] missed.” Then a year later, he just up and changes his Twitter profile background to a pretty shade of blue. C’mon Ed, drop a single. And it’s nothing but silence until the New Year when he finally tells us new music is coming. He’s been on a media tour since the release of the new singles and he gave us this little gem:

Bless your sweet,Ginger soul, Ed!!!

Favorite Netflix Show/Movie

Donni: Chewing Gum. My friend Lindsey suggested that I watch it and I instantly loved it. It’s certainly not for everyone, but I found  it hilarious. The second season is airing in the UK and I’m trying to figure out how I can watch it now.

Ace: Blue Jay. I’ve already confessed my love for Sarah Paulson to y’all, but that’s not why Blue Jay made the list. It’s one of the movies that made me laugh and smile for the entire time, until the last 5 minutes. Also on my list? Crazyhead. Usually, I don’t willingly watch shows about zombies, but this writing for this one wheeled me in. Friday Favorites: New Year, New Faves -- The Palmetto Peaches - palmsinatl.com

Friday Faves: Olympics Edition

Friday Faves: Olympics Edition- The Palmetto Peaches - palmsinatl.comThis past weekend your Palmetto Peaches were reunited in ATL. As always shenanigans ensued. From a disastrous attempt to complete Buzzfeed’s Olympics Opening Ceremony Drinking Game to an attempt at Sunday brunch, the weekend was full of adventures.  So in honor of us dancing ing Virginia Highlands like we were trying to win a gold medal, we’re recapping some of our favorite things in this Olympics Edition of Friday Faves.

Fave Cocktail

  • Gold: We give the gold to the Moscow Mule. After an adventure to Target for copper mugs, we made our own version of Moscow Mules. We skipped the limes and just bought lime-flavored vodka, but they were delicious.

Friday Faves: Olympics Edition - The Palmetto Peaches- palmsinatl.com

  • Silver:  Although, one of us was too hungover/weak/dehydrated to fully enjoy them, mimosas at Henry’s deserves second place.
  • Bronze: Water belong on our podium because at our age, we know how essential it is.

Fave Snack

  • Gold: On Sunday, we ventured to the Farmer’s market for a few items so Donni could meal prep and ended up with an assortment of cheeses.  We bought Gorgonzola Dolce, aged goat Gouda, and Asiago Fresco. How classy of us, right? I guess after taking shots
  • Silver: On Friday night we opted for a white pizza, with spinach, chicken and feta. Who says pizza can’t be a snack?
  • Bronze:  The Parmesan Truffle Fries at Henry’s were so delicious.

Fave Song

  • Gold: Okay, so while not technically a song. All weekend we were jamming to the Sirius XM Fly station that plays hip hop and R&B from the 90s and 2000s. Yasss for all the jams!
  • Silver: So every time the Olympics theme song  played we had to do a waterfall in that Olympics opening ceremony drinking game. The thing is we were never quite clear if we heard it,so we would just do the waterfall anyway. Bad decision.
  • Bronze: “Wipe Me Down” – If only we could have captured the epic dance party that went down in Virginia Highlands. It was definitely a throwback to a night in 5 Points during our undergrad days.

Fave Olympic Sport

  • Gold: Women’s gymnastics runs away with the competition. Simone Biles is just amazing to watch. Aly Raisman’s parents are just as entertaining to watch as the gymnast herself, and we simply love Gabby Douglas and the rest of the team.
  • Silver: Three names: Michael Phelps, Missy Franklin, and Simone Manuel. They alone make swimming interesting, but add in Ryan Lochte’s hair and swimming easily comes in second.
  • Bronze: This is hard. You can’t go wrong with basketball. However, how bomb has Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross been dominating beach volleyball? We can’t decide on a winner for this one.

Are you watching the Olympics? Let us know what you’ve loved so far in the comments below!

Friday Faves – Spring Love & Lust List

Welcome to the end of the week, everyone! I hope you all have some exciting plans for the weekend or maybe you’ve carved out some self care time. I’m not sure what’s been happening with the weather in your corner of this Earth, but in Atlanta we’re expecting some serious April showers. Because of that, I don’t think I’ll be scratching a whole lot of  I’m going to spend some time with my friends, get a little shopping in, and try to get a jump ahead on May blog posts. But before I get started, here are five things that I love or am lusting after right now…

Spring Love & Lust List

Fave Spring Sip

If you don’t know I’m a huge fangirl of Lisamarie (Paper + Glam) and her love of seasonal living. On her April Life List, one of the items was to sip Coconut Lavender Lemonade. I’ve tried to like coconut water, but I can’t. It tastes like Bonnaroo 2010, but that’s a story for another day. I went with Lavender Lemonade. Check out this recipe from Eat Yourself Skinny.

Fave Spring Scent

I have a habit of buying candles even when I don’t need them. When the 3-wick Bath and Body Works Candles go on sale I go crazy. P.S. they are $12.50 right now. You can also head over to Michael’s and grab 3 for $10. Anyways the scents I’m lusting after are: Bow Ties & Bourbon, Lemon Mint & Tea, and Hello Beautiful. I’ve purchased Bow Ties & Bourbon before and loved it. Although, according to my visitors it just smelled like a Kentucky gentleman had been in my house.

Fave Spring Read

I don’t know if you’ve peeped my Instagram lately, but you may have seen To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. The book is about a girl in high school who writes letters to the major loves of her life with the intention of the boys never seeing her letters. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, the letters are mailed out. It’s a cute quick read and it made me want to be in high school again. Although, my high school love life was nothing like the main characters. I finished it in two days and immediately ran to the library for the sequel: P.S. I Still Love You.

Fave Find

I’m at the beginning stages of purchasing my first home. This is going to be a slow process, but I want to get this right. I’ve enrolled in a home buyer education class and am working on getting my finances in order. In the meantime, I’ve loved looking at houses with different style and home decor.  I stumbled across this list of style quizzes: http://www.brit.co/decor-style-quizzes/ and my favorite was HomeGoods’ Stylescope quiz. Apparently I’m urban funk with a touch of farmhouse glam.

Friday Faves: Spring Love & Lust List - The Palmetto Peaches

Urban Funk has undeniable funk and soul. She’s at home in a place where industrial meets comfort, where over-the-top meets laid-back chill, and where retro art meets graphic simplicity. And she does all this in a way that feels totally effortless. Farmhouse Glam is the delicate, exquisite balance between beautiful femininity and rustic nonchalance. She’s all about the discovery of unexpected sparkle amidst the less polished. She wears high heels and a denim jacket, a string of pearls and bare feet. And her home feels as special as it does comfortable.

Yup I buy all of that.

Fave Tunes

Lemonade. Lemonade. Lemonade. Obviously, I’m loving Queen Bey’s new music and am super jealous Ace is headed off to Tampa to experience this tour. Besides Beyoncé, I can’t get enough of Mike Posner’s I Took a Pill in Ibiza, Drake’s One Dance and I’ve had Prince’s entire catalogue on repeat.

The Award Goes To… (Friday Faves)

Friday Faves - The Award Goes To Edition - The Palmetto Peaches

For this edition of Friday Favorites we’re announcing our winners for some of the things that have caught our eye/kept us entertained at the beginning of this new year.

Fave Golden Globe Winner: The Award Goes to…

Ace: Although Taraji P. Henson’s #YouGonWait line stole my heart, I was so happy to see Gael García Bernal (Mozart in the Jungle) win Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series- Musical or Comedy. His character makes me laugh out loud EVERY episode. Mozart in the Jungle is one of my new favs, because I get to dabble in the arts, and be a little dysfunctional at the same time.

Donni: Well he didn’t win and this really has nothing to do with the movie Concussion, but Will and Jada’s PDA on the red carpet was everything to me. Real definition of #relationshipgoals.

Fave Oscar Nominee: The Award Goes to…

Donni: I’ll get to my favorite Oscar nominee in just a moment, but first I wanted to mention the minority-free Oscar nominee list. Last year the hashtag  #OscarsSoWhite was used to protest the lack of diversity of the nominees. And for the second year in a row, Oscar voters put forth an all-white field of acting nominees.  Here are some of the snubs, many who were nominated for Golden Globes, BAFTA or Spirit Awards: Will Smith in Concussion, Michael B. Jordan in Creed, Idris Elba in Beasts of No Nation and Samuel L. Jackson (whom I can’t stand) in The Hateful Eight, Benicio Del Toro in Sicario, and Kitana Kiki Rodriguez and Mya Taylor, the transgender actresses for Tangerine. I took a peek at the comments section of a few articles that covered this yesterday — big mistake!!! I kept reading that there are BET Awards so everyone should stop complaining (uh no, not the point).  Or that there shouldn’t be token black or Latino actors nominated just to make everyone happy. The point is regardless of color these actors had Oscar-worthy performances.  Now on to who I’m really excited for: LEOOOOO!!

Leonardo DiCaprio has earned his fifth Academy Award nomination for his performance in The Revenant. Break out your lucky shot glass, socks and underwear because I’m really hoping 5th time is the charm for Leo. As much as I love the memes that are created when he loses, I really do think he deserves to win. He has to take down Bryan Cranston, Matt Damon, Michael Fassbender and Eddie Redmayne to grab that award, but damnit I’m rooting for him.

Ace: I hope Leo finally gets an Oscar this year. That is all.

Fave Goal Achieving tool – The award goes to…

Ace: So far, my favorite goal achieving tool is my new Daily Bloom planner! I’m taking baby steps with getting back into a routine (one of my 2016 goals). So before investing in a more advanced planner, I chose this one. I love it so far, because it reminds me of the agendas I used in high school. (Except I didn’t use fingernail polish to remove the screen off to be able to add pictures of my friends.)

Donni: Like a true planner girl, I was going to say my Erin Condren Life Planner, but The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing has really helped me declutter my life. I’m not finished going through all of my stuff, but I’ve already cleared out 2 dresser drawers full of clothing and made my closet actually look like a closet and not a storage space on Storage Wars.

Favorite 2016 Inspiration: The Award goes to…

Donni:I’m taking a page out of Kid President‘s book and am making 2016 my year of awesome. In the words of Kid President, I’m going to be like cheese (or bacon) and make everything I touch better.

The Award Goes to.. Friday Faves - Inspiration - The Palmetto Peaches

Ace:  Solange Knowles and Amandla Stenberg sprinkling #BlackGirlMagic like confetti in Teen Vogue.

“There’s a secret language shared among black girls who are destined to climb mountains and cross rivers in a world that tells us to belong to the valleys that surround us. You learn it very young, and although it has no words, you hear it clearly. You sense it when you walk into rooms with your hair in full bloom, each coil glorious, your sway swift and your stance proud. You feel it like a rhythm you can’t shake if you even dared to quiet the sounds around you.” –Solange Knowles
