If you read my Where’s Ace? post, you know I’ll be living in Austin, Texas for a few months. It’s my first time, but I’ve only heard good things about the city. To prepare myself for the adventure, I did some research on things I’d like to do while I’m there.
7 Cool Things To Do in Austin
Take a hip hop class at Dance Austin
A little hashtag stalking took me to a video of a stiletto class at Dance Austin. It gave me a “no judgement zone” vibe, and seems like a studio for all dance levels and age groups.
Have dinner at Launderette
Birthday cake ice cream sandwiches,, burgers and 1/2 off happy hour drinks are an instant way to my heart. Do your taste-buds a favor and search Launderette on Instagram. Pretty sure I actually drooled looking at pictures and reading captions.
Participate in the LGBTQI Film Festival
Whether it’s watching a few films or volunteering, the film festival can be a way to meet new people and get involved in the community. A big part of our Connections Media adventure include a documentary style series, so this may bring inspiration and education.
Winter Wonderland at The Circuit (December)
It’s never too early to start thinking about Christmas festivities! There will be ice skating, lights and a petting zoo to help spread holiday cheer.
Attend the Eastside Kings Festival
I like to imagine I was a blues singer in my former life. The Eastside Kings is a group of OG blues singers who celebrate the genre by performing in “neighborhoods where the music began”. A lot of our time in Austin will be dedicated to a songwriter series, so of course I want to see as many local musicians as possible. Plus, EKF sounds like it’s going to be a family reunion.
Visit the African American Portrait Project
The project honors African American leaders who played important roles in America and Austin’s history. I don’t know much about Texas period, so I’ll start here.

Dance the night away at Cheer Up Charlies
Cheer Up Charlies is a gay bar in Austin. From my personal experience, it’s pretty much impossible to not have fun at a drag show or karaoke. Also, with a name like that–who wouldn’t have a great time?
