Swipe Left: Dating App Deal Breakers

Globally, over 200 million people use digital dating services every month. Yes, 200 million!!! Today, while some of you are getting ready for your Valentine’s Day dates or snuggling with your significant other – throw some good vibes the way of your single friends who are still swiping to find love.

We personally both use dating apps. Sometimes just to pass the time. No matter what your “thing is” – there is a dating app out there for you. For example, there are estimated 50 million people that use Tinder. On Bumble women make the first move; Hinge connects you with friends of friends; on Happn you match with people you’ve walked past in real life. JSwipe, is a Jewish dating app. There’s Hater, a dating app that determines compatibility based on the things you hate. And wait for it, there are even political apps like NeverTrump.Dating which encourages users to “escape Trumpism with an enlightened lover” and Donald Daters, an app for Trump supporters that uses the tagline “make America date again”. Totally not making this up!

No matter what your platform is most people have some deal breakers or something that automatically makes them swipe left (or the equivalent on the app).

Obviously, you have to factor in attraction (and for me grammar and fanbase NO Clemson fans), but there are some other red flags that make me automatically swipe left:

  • Picture of their keys

So this has happened on apps in IRL. If one of the guys’ pictures is of him posing on his car or just of his Tesla/BMW/Benz keys, I’m already annoyed. I don’t care what you drive and it can all be a lie. My first college boyfriend picked me up in his sister’s Infiniti. He actually drove a Hyundai that had one functional door. A few weekends ago, this guy (who I was only talking to because I wanted to talk SEC football and trash talk Florida), tried whipping out his Tesla keys on the bar. Me:

Guess what? It didn’t make him any cuter, but it did make him appear to be a huge douchebag.

  • Kids

I actually don’t care if a guy has a kid. I’m getting older and potentially dating older men. My issue is why they would use their kid as a prop. There are weird people on the internet. DO NOT parade your sweet babies around for strangers. Especially don’t highlight them on your profile if you only see them once a month or at Christmas.

  • Insulting Women

This is a huge red flag.

  • “Where are all the nice girls?”
  • “Looking for a girl who isn’t crazy!”

If a man’s entire profile is a rant about how much he hates his ex or how crazy all the women he dates are, I just assume something is wrong with him.

  • Borrowing other people pets.

I love dogs. I really love dogs. You can love dogs and not have one. I understand that. Maybe your apartment doesn’t allow them or you don’t have the time. However, I believe it’s incredible misleading and unfair for a guy to include some puppy pictures (here come all the swooning animal lovers) and then say: BTW, the dog isn’t mine. Sir, you know what you were doing when you uploaded that picture. Puppies are girl bait.

  • Vague profile.

If their profile is blank and just photos, I’m concerned. Dude, you are 30 years old. You couldn’t take 2 minutes to write 2 sentences about yourself.  I don’t trust you. Either you think you are so good looking you don’t need it or you’re lazy – both of which I’m uninterested in – Swipe left!!

  • Multiple kids.

I will probably make a great stepmother one day – but until then, I’m enjoying this time as an auntie. I grew up in a single-parent home, so I know they’re superheroes. The older I get, the slimmer my chances are of meeting someone with NO kids, therefore, 2 kids is my limit.

  • Multiple furry pets.

To avoid sounding like a crazy person and offending animal lovers, I’m just going to blame this one on my awful allergies.

  • Red MAGA hat.

We don’t have to have the same political views, but I don’t need that type of energy in my life right now. A Trump supporter probably wouldn’t swipe right on me anyway, but still.

  • A “money over everything” attitude.

Especially if “money over everything” is in your bio. LOL. No thx. Financial stability is amazing, but being materialistic isn’t my cup of tea.

  • All your pictures are professional headshots.

Do you have friends? Do you have fun? I have questions.

Ultimately, everyone has different dating deal breakers, and only you can decide what does and doesn’t pique your interest. Single readers or formerly single what were your dating app deal breakers? Leave a comment below!

  1. Love this post! It’s funny, but also true! I’m married but always feel for my friends who are dealing with the nonsense that dating has turned into. Best of luck!

  3. I’ve tried dating apps off and on over the last few years and I’ve never found a relationship with them. I think it is harder than it looks to meet someone you actually feel connected to online!! Ugh haha.

  4. Oh my gosh this brought me back! I met my husband through an online dating app, and though it’s been a while since I was in the dating boat, it doesn’t sound like much has changed. The dog bait thing is SO true!!

  5. I am so happy that I got out of the dating game before online dating became a thing but I can totally relate to this! I would be annoyed seeing stuff like that on a dating app.
